For some people the word “Nawar” is so much related to their social standard, especially for girls, examples are (I wont go there because its full of “Nawar”, or he is “Nawary” I don want to be around him”)
Some of the girls assume that Jordan is all about western Amman, wake up please, going to work, cafes, bars and doing whatever you do in western Amman doesn’t mean that Jordan is limited to western Amman, its much more than that.
Just because you do everything in Western Amman, some basically forget about Jordan as a whole, thinking that they are the majority and everybody else is categorized under a minority flag, the Fact is, you’re a minority.

If you call others “Nawar” just because they stare at you, or just because you look different, that could be in the form of not wearing a veil or revealing parts of your body, or refusing to deal with so called “low class” people assuming that your better than them, all that would totally make you isolated in your own world, if your fine with that then that is great, but I believe its such a pity.if you want to be accepted by the society then may be you should accept its standards, its people, religion, social standards, etc… but that puts you in a dilemma of being yourself or be just like the way people want you to be, you can simply chose any or you can have a mix of them, and it shouldn’t be a conflict, although it is for some people, for me personally I like to be myself, and myself only :)
P.S: I personally like Nawar, and there are mysterious people and living a bohemian way of life, by the way bohemian comes from Bohemia (Czech )
I really want to know what you people think when somebody says “Nawar” or Nawari”, what is the first thing that pops into your mind?

I think that it all depends on whether the user means for it to be an adjective or a noun, also, whether the user intends to use it maliciously or in an innocuous fashion. So it could be a reference to an epithet, a slur, derogatory term, calumnious description, someone heathen, Paleolithic person, or even a chaotic one. I think that it is one of those all purpose labels. You can attach it to someone with improper attire, to someone behaving irrationally, or to someone gruff. I think that it is also gender drive, male for example doesn’t use it as much-- while female use it very heavily. It seems like it works as a cathartic term for them, once they label a male subject as nawary, then everything else that ensues the labeling would gain a wider acceptance. It is like a handicap of some sort, a defective person, and nonfunctioning one, impaired. It also could be a reference to vagrancy, homelessness, eroticism, sexism, and misoyginism. In essence it is a vague term that isn’t found in any thesauruses or anything like that, Often times it is generically used as slang. I have never heard anyone with any kind of scholarly cognizance uses the term, so generally speaking it works like a boomerangs, and those who use it are themselves nawar.
Actually Bashar, I think that those girls do have a point. When they try to avoid being in a place with Nawars, it is not because they are classist, it is because in such places they are subjected to sexual harassement rather than a high class places.
Look at the word Nawar, it is more associated with males than females. What's ironic is that it is more associated with high class females and low class males.
I mean high class females wearing a bit revealing are considered to be nawar by some! The same way a low class man sexually harassing a woman!
Hareega,
I wish you could add more than a word :)

Maybe the girls have a point, they are subjected to sexual harassement but does that mean to live in insolation and rejecting others?
if your SO different then you will be out of the mainstream, and that is not good at all!
Bashar,
Now that I have had a little more time to think about it, I think that the primary reason which makes people call each others with these ugly names is simply to insult them, denigrate them, slander them, and defame them. They associate the usage of the word with negative connotation; it is similar to associating people with drug addiction, alcoholism, and so on. In reality the Nawar aren’t all that bad of people, but the reference to their ethnicity over the years has been watered down in a way that it started to be used as a pejorative jargon to someone or some people that are inordinate, that they have no class, or belong to lowest level of the society stratosphere. In the United stated they use the word “nigger” to downgrade somebody, while it is primarily used to describe black people white people use it too to refer to someone that isn’t living to standards set forth by the white man. White people too --sometimes call each others “white trash”. So it isn’t really limited to one race, ethnic groups, or nationality, I’m sure that other races have different naming for denigrating as well we just don’t hear much about it. I guess the bottom line is: If someone wants to be a huckster let them be who cares, really.
